THE QUALITY OF STUDENTS' REASONS FOR THE STEPS IN A GEOMETRIC CALCULATION

We report on the variety fo reasons that students give for each step in a three-step geometric calculation. Where these reasons are non-standard this may be partly due to a lack of familiarity with the appropraite conventions, but it may also indicate that students need to articulate such reasons as scaffolding for their explanations.
