The Proof Material Project (PMP) sought, through collaboration with advisors and groups of teachers from several LEAs, to produce guidance and stimulus materials for teachers that can be used to develop the mathematical reasoning of pupils across the ability range in Key Stages 3 and 4. The work used as a springboard the findings of the Longitudinal Proof Project (LPP), in particular the categories of pupil responses to various proof items derived from this project and the extensive bank of responses that the project has accumulated.
In the event, we worked with two groups of teachers, one from Hampshire and one from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Work with the teachers started in the summer term 2004 and finishished in the summer term 2005. Each group met several times per term, sometimes for the whole day, sometimes in the afternoons. Teachers also visited each other in their schools. We are extremely grateful for the genrosity of the Hampshire and Suffolk local authorities that made this possible, and especially for the support given to the project by Wendy Hoskin (the then county inspector/advisor mathematics, Hampshire) and Colin Matthews (the then mathematics advisor, Suffolk).
